Three templates for sustainable shared leadership

The tools I work with in projects – as compact templates to use yourself. Each captures what really matters in practice.

These three templates cover the building blocks shared leadership most often hinges on: clear roles, clean decisions and an honest status check. They don’t replace guidance, but give you a concrete starting point.

1 · The tandem manifesto

A one-page document in which a leadership duo captures its collaboration: who owns which area, which decisions are made jointly, and what happens in disagreement. It’s this writing-down that makes agreements binding, rather than leaving them negotiable in your heads.

Background: roles & responsibility and outward presence.

2 · The decision matrix

A simple table that assigns each decision type a mode: alone (in whose area), together, or with backing. At its core is the agreed rule for when you don’t agree – the single most important building block of shared leadership.

Explained in detail in decision rules in a leadership tandem.

3 · The readiness checklist

A short self-check for organisations: is the task divisible? Is there a willingness to genuinely share power? Do bodies and processes carry the model? The checklist helps get an honest picture before a decision.

Fits the readiness check in consulting.
