Practice lens

From the idea to practical application

Shared role

A fully shared role places a large decision space in common ownership. That can suit highly intertwined work but increases coordination demand. Test whether the extra shared space actually creates better judgement or merely more meetings.

Split domains

Domain splits give each leader clear territory under one mandate. They reduce duplication but can create two neighbouring silos. The design question is which issues must remain in a shared core to keep the overall role integrated.

Rotating lead

A rotating lead fits work where expertise or project phase changes. Rotation needs a clear handover trigger; authority should not be renegotiated in every meeting. Otherwise flexibility is purchased with uncertainty.

Top-sharing

Top-sharing combines joint leadership with divided working time. Availability, handovers and representation therefore become first-order design variables. A conceptually sound role can still fail through duplicated information work or unclear coverage.

Distributed leadership

Distributed leadership extends beyond a named pair and allows leadership contributions to move more widely with expertise and situation. It is related to tandem leadership but requires different governance, so it should not be treated as merely another two-person configuration.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about this topic.

Which shared-leadership models are worth distinguishing?

Examples include a joint role with lead domains, top-sharing, functionally differentiated dual leadership, rotating leads and broader shared-leadership arrangements. Real organisations often combine elements.

Which model creates the least coordination cost?

Not automatically the model with the strongest separation. The best fit depends on whether decision rights, handovers and the shared core match the real interdependence of the work.

Can a tandem change its model later?

Yes. Roles and decision rights should be treated as testable agreements. Changes in task, expertise or working time may justify a different architecture.
