In the research literature they are not the same – and the distinction matters, because it leads to different design questions.

Shared leadership: a few people (often two) deliberately share one role and the responsibility – tandem, dual leadership.

Distributed leadership: leadership is stretched across many people and the situation – it emerges from the interplay of a whole system, not a fixed constellation.

From my own practice

In practice I notice the difference in the opening question. For a tandem it’s “which of the two of us decides what?”. For distributed leadership it’s “how does leadership emerge across many roles?”. Those are two different building sites.

What distributed leadership means

The term distributed leadership comes mainly from organisational and educational research (Gronn, Spillane). It describes leadership not as the trait of a person and not as the matter of a fixed duo, but as something distributed across many actors, roles and situations, emerging there collectively. Leadership becomes a property of the system, not of the individual.

Shared, distributed, delegation – the map

Term

Core

Typical constellation

Shared leadership

a few share one role deliberately

tandem, dual leadership

Distributed leadership

leadership stretched across many

whole organisation, system

Delegation

hand over tasks, responsibility stays

one leader + team

Shared, distributed and delegated leadership compared

More on the core topic in the shared leadership guide and on the two-person variant under co-leadership & dual leadership.

What this means for you

For most of my clients, shared leadership is the relevant topic: two people, one role, clear rules. Distributed leadership is more of an organisation-wide culture question.
