Unlike the umbrella term shared leadership, co-leadership foregrounds the concrete constellation: two names, one role, shared responsibility.

Where the term comes from

„Co-leadership“ is an English term established in the business context – especially for co-CEO constellations and founding teams. In German it’s often used interchangeably with „shared leadership“ or „dual leadership“.

Co-leadership vs. shared leadership

Many ask this – and most sources answer it vaguely. Clearly put: co-leadership usually describes the concrete constellation of two named people in one role. Shared leadership is the broader umbrella term for the principle of shared leadership responsibility. In practice both are often used synonymously. My recommendation: use „shared leadership“ as the umbrella term and „co-leadership“ for the concrete two-person constellation.

The full comparison table and the distinction from distributed leadership are in the shared-leadership article.
